From Overwhelmed to Award-Winning

How One Small Business Owner Turned a Nomination into a Powerful Confidence Boost

When Tracey Jurd started her natural skincare business, Tracey’s Tender Loving Care, she didn’t imagine she'd be standing among finalists for a major national business award less than a year later - let alone taking out multiple local wins.

But that's exactly what happened.

Tracey came to me last year after hearing about a few business awards she was eligible for. She had some information about them, but when it came to actually applying, she didn’t know where to start. The forms were long, the questions felt huge, and like many small business owners, she wasn’t sure how to “talk herself up” without it feeling uncomfortable.

“I was excited about being nominated and picked out of over 5,000 businesses - that felt like such a privilege. But when I saw the application, I didn’t know what to write or where to start. It felt like such a big deal.”

Sound familiar?

You’re not alone - and you’re definitely not underqualified.

Awards Feel Big — Because They Are

The Australian Small Business Champion Awards received over 5,500 nominations last year. Tracey was one of them. And not just that - she made it to the finals.

For a solo business owner with a big vision, strong values, and no marketing team behind her, that’s huge.

But here’s what’s even better: she also entered the Logan Business Chamber of Commerce’s Business Distinctions Awards, and walked away with:

🥇 Winner: Creative Industries
🥇 Winner: Sole Trader of the Year
🏅 Finalist: New and Emerging Business

“It really changed how I saw my business. I’ve always taken it seriously, but now I feel like I can show people - this isn’t a hobby. It’s my career, and I’m proud of it.”

So, What Did I Actually Do?

Tracey already knew about the awards and was excited about the opportunity. But the application process felt overwhelming - and that’s where I came in.

We had a relaxed discovery session where she shared her business story, goals, and customer impact. She sent through a few documents (business plan, previous milestones, photos), and I got to work crafting the nomination for her - from start to finish.

My job wasn’t to add fluff. It was to help her:

  • Align her answers with what judges actually look for

  • Highlight the strengths she didn’t realise were so powerful

  • Keep it clear, concise, and professional

  • And make sure it still sounded like her

Her reaction to the final version was one of genuine relief and emotion - a clear signal that her story was finally captured in a way that resonated with her.

What Changed for Her?

Here’s what Tracey experienced in the months following her awards journey:

  • Increased media exposure (local features and shares)

  • More customers and higher sales

  • A confidence boost she didn’t expect

  • Stronger credibility in the eyes of new clients and collaborators

  • More opportunities to network, grow, and even explore investment

She now proudly displays her finalist certificate at every market stall and event.

“It gave me a real sense of validation. Like… yeah, I’m doing this. It’s working. I’m on the right track, and people can see that too.”
