When Decision-Making Feels Like Quicksand (Especially for ND Brains)
If you’ve ever stood in the middle of your business inbox or your living room, paralysed by whether to respond, delegate, or throw your phone in a bush — hi, you’re not alone.
Decision-making is one of those deceptively simple tasks that can unravel a whole day. Especially if you're neurodivergent. For some of us, choosing between emails or invoices can trigger the same internal chaos as deciding whether to move countries.
And the kicker? Most decision-making advice out there was not designed for brains like ours.
This post isn’t about crushing your goals or finding your “yes girl” energy. It’s about finding a grounded, realistic way to make decisions that feel aligned — without spiralling, procrastinating, or making impulsive choices you regret later (hello, surprise business rebrand at 2am).
Why Decision-Making Is Hard (And No, It’s Not Just You)
Let’s name it:
Impulsivity can push us into “just do it” mode without sitting with the consequences.
Decision paralysis often shows up when every option feels equally risky or wrong.
Procrastination might seem like avoidance, but it’s often fear dressed up as “I need to think more.”
If you’ve been beating yourself up about this, stop. Your brain isn’t broken. But you might need a different approach.
My HEADS Framework for Decision-Making
Before you pick a method, check your state. I call these the five red flags — if one’s waving, it’s not time to decide.
Hungry – Snack first. Nobody makes a wise call mid blood sugar crash.
Emotional extremes – Decisions made from high anxiety, rage, or euphoria rarely age well. Try to return to baseline.
Alcohol (or other brain foggers) – Your judgment is impaired. Even if you feel clear in the moment, you probably aren’t.
Distracted – If you’ve got a dozen tabs open (literally or mentally), you’re not in a decision-ready state.
Sleepy – Fatigue makes everything harder. Rest, then reassess.
Tools That Can Work (If You Use Them Right)
Let’s demystify the toolbox:
Pros and Cons List – Simple, visual, great for medium-stakes calls.
Eisenhower Matrix – I use this daily. It helps sort what’s urgent vs. important. Especially good when everything feels “now.”
Consulting Others – Yes, but choose carefully. Don’t crowdsource your business identity in a group chat.
Gut Instinct – Valuable, but only when your nervous system is regulated.
48-Hour Rule – Let the idea marinate before sharing or acting. See if it still feels true in two days.
Pro tip: A decision-making tool won’t save you if your inputs are unclear. That’s why I focus on state management first.
For My Neurodivergent Business Owners:
Here’s how I guide my ADHD coaching clients through decision overload:
Name Your Pattern – Are you an avoider, a jumper, or a spiraller?
Timebox the Decision – “I’ll decide this by Friday” is clearer than “I’ll think about it.”
Build in Processing Time – Especially if it’s emotionally charged or affects others.
Use a Safe Sounding Board – This could be me, a coach, or a biz bestie who gets your wiring.
Normalise Taking Longer – You are not a slower entrepreneur. You’re a more thoughtful one.
The Real Goal? Trusting Yourself Again
Most of the time, it’s not just the decision we’re anxious about. It’s the fear we’ll screw it up. But trust is built by noticing, reflecting, adjusting — not by being perfect the first time.
If decision-making regularly unravels you, it’s not a sign you’re not cut out for business. It’s a sign your decision system isn’t built for how your brain actually works.
And that? We can change.
